What this site collects

This site has no analytics and no tracking. It sets no cookies. Your browser only keeps your language choice and the settings of the question page on your device; this is not sent to me. Nothing is loaded from third-party servers while you read. I only receive data from you if you ask a question, report a mistake, write to me, sign up for the newsletter or apply.

Server log files

The hosting provider automatically collects and stores information your browser sends, in server log files: browser type and version, operating system, referrer URL, hostname of the accessing computer, time of the request and IP address. This data is not combined with any other data source. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, my legitimate interest in running the site securely and without technical errors.

Hosting

This site is hosted by Host Europe GmbH, Hansestraße 111, 51149 Cologne, Germany. Host Europe processes the data listed above on my behalf under a data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR.

Contacting me by email

If you write to me at info@islam-today.com, I use your information only to reply to you. I don’t share it with anyone. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(a) and (f) GDPR. I keep your message until the matter is resolved, unless a legal retention requirement says otherwise. After that, it is deleted. Emails are received and stored through Gmail by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Google may also process data outside the European Union and relies on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

Questions to Islam-Today

When you ask a question on the home page or at /ask, my server sends the question and the earlier questions and answers of this conversation to Anthropic PBC, 548 Market Street, San Francisco, USA. Its AI model Claude writes the answer from our sources. Anthropic processes the data as a service provider and, under its own terms, does not use it for training. The transfer to the USA is based on the standard contractual clauses of the EU Commission. To pick fitting sources and to recognise similar questions that were already answered, my server also sends the text of the question to Voyage AI Innovations Inc., USA (part of MongoDB); Voyage processes it as a service provider, and the transfer is likewise based on the standard contractual clauses. Questions and answers without a conversation history are kept with this numeric form of the question for up to 60 days, so that the same questions are answered at once. On my server I store the question, the answer language, the sources named, the page the question came from, the time and the cost of the answer, without IP address and without name, for 12 months, to improve the answers and to watch the costs. This includes a visitor id computed from your IP address and a random value that changes every day; the random value is deleted after the day, after which the id can no longer be linked to any IP address. For analysis I also keep these details, without IP address, in a table at Airtable Inc., San Francisco, USA, based on the standard contractual clauses of the EU Commission. So that nobody can send very many questions, the server counts the questions per day under an encrypted checksum of your IP address and your network; this count is deleted after the day. Before sending, your browser solves a small computing task that makes mass questions by bots harder; nothing is stored for it and no cookies are set. Your conversation so far is stored only in your browser. If you dictate your question with the microphone, your voice goes directly from your browser to Soniox, Inc., USA, which turns it into text and detects the language. Soniox processes the recording as a service provider and, by its own terms, does not use it for training; the transfer to the USA is based on the standard contractual clauses of the EU Commission. If this service cannot be reached, your browser uses its own speech recognition (Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari). For this my server only counts the dictations per day under an encrypted checksum of your IP address; this count is deleted after the day. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, the legitimate interest in answering questions about Islam with sources. Please do not enter personal data in questions.

Reporting a mistake

If you report a mistake with the form at /report-a-problem, I store your details on my server at Host Europe GmbH and send them by email to info@islam-today.com: the kind and place of the mistake, your description, the page, if you wish the question and the start of the answer you saw, attached screenshots, the kind of device, the details of your browser (name, version and operating system) and, only if you give it, your email address for questions. I do not store your IP address for this. So that nobody can send very many reports, the server counts the reports per hour under an encrypted checksum of your IP address; this count is deleted after two hours. Your browser keeps the last question and the start of its answer only in this tab, so that the form can fill them in; neither reaches me until you send the report. Please make sure your screenshots do not show personal data. I use your email address only for questions about this report. Reports and screenshots are deleted after 12 months at the latest. The legal basis is your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, which you can withdraw at any time by email to info@islam-today.com, and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, the legitimate interest in fixing mistakes on the website.

Contact form

If you write to me through the contact form in the footer, I use your name, your email address and your message only to reply to you. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(a) and (f) GDPR. My server at Host Europe GmbH sends the message by email to info@islam-today.com and does not store it itself. The email is received and stored by Google Ireland Limited as part of Gmail. I keep it until the matter is resolved, unless a legal retention requirement says otherwise. For every form on this site, the server keeps a checksum of your IP address for about two hours, so that no one can send a large number of requests in a short time.

Newsletter

If you sign up for the newsletter, I store your email address and the language of the page so I can tell you about new videos and news from Islam-Today. You confirm your address once with a link we send you by email. Only then will you receive the newsletter. The legal basis is your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. You can withdraw it at any time, with the unsubscribe link in every email or by writing to info@islam-today.com. I keep your address until you unsubscribe. The confirmation email comes from my server, and until the first newsletter your address is stored only there. The newsletter itself is sent with Brevo, an email service based in Paris, France. Brevo processes the data on my behalf under a contract in line with Art. 28 GDPR.

Applications

If you apply through the form on /join, I process your details and your CV only to decide on your work with Islam-Today and to contact you. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. Your details and your CV are stored on my server at Host Europe GmbH and sent by email to info@islam-today.com. These emails are received and stored by Google Ireland Limited as part of Gmail. If you do not join, I delete your application six months after my reply.

This site links to Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads, the Islam-Today WhatsApp channel and arif.de. These links only open when you click them. From then on, the privacy policy of that provider applies.

Your rights

You have the right to know what data about you is stored, where it came from, who received it and why it was processed. You also have the right to have it corrected or deleted. You can contact me about this at any time at the address in the imprint. You also have the right to file a complaint with the relevant supervisory authority.

SSL encryption

For security reasons, this site uses SSL/TLS encryption. You can tell the connection is encrypted by the https:// in your browser’s address bar.
